This weekend we have the Oceanside HS boys (Varsity & JV) hosting Torrey Pines in a big rivalry match, Friday night (Jan 30) lights at MLK park. This is a great opportunity for the Oceanside/Thunder community to demonstrate appropriate behavior for both supporters and players…Please support our teams appropriately and positively, and avoid harassing referees. We have NO reason to engage the other team in any way. HS Girls will be at Encinitas Community Park Saturday (Jan 31)with LCC hosting the tournament. U8-U14 are all up at Mira Costa High School hosted by LA Rugby club on Saturday as well. Good luck everyone!
HS Boys

Textbook two man “chop and top” tackle, just like we practice!

Oceanside faced off against San Clemente this weekend in a rematch of last year’s high school final that saw O’side fall short in the final minutes. Varsity overcame some early miscues in the first couple minutes to find a rhythm on Saturday jumping to an early 12-0 lead with tries from Georgie Faasua and Deacon Maeva, utilizing some slick open play and powerful running from the forwards. The Tritons were able answer back with a try of their own but Oceanside responded before half with another try from Georgie Faasua making the game 17-5 at the break. O’side opened the 2nd half with a try from Malachi Misa but San Clemente stormed back making the game 22-19. Oceanside remained calm and disciplined playing phases in their half when Captain and recent GCU commit Thomas Reynoso found a gap and thundered down field for a 70 meter try extending the lead. Kymani Nua found space out wide and dotted one down to put a final cap on the game at the end of regulation. Final score for Varsity 34-19. Standout players Thomas Reynoso, Malachi Misa, Patty Knight and Georgie Faasua.
JV played San Clemente Tritons as well with a final score of 38 -5 San Clemente. Though the score doesn't reflect it, the JV boys continue to improve their play together. Each week they make the physical and mental gains they need to improve as a team. Our one try was of course a team effort but it was Dillon Gulley who carried it in. We also saw some great running by Jaysun Afasene, who despite his smaller frame powered through the competition.
HS Girls

Oceanside HS girls had an amazing weekend with a 2-1 record against Rancho Bernardo (50-0), Poway (52-7), and St. Anthony (14-26). Although we took a loss this weekend it was a very hard fought game and I am very impressed with how the girls carried themselves and pushed each other all the way to the end. Martha Wong finally came back to join us after playing basketball and did an amazing job running the ball and creating spaces for her teammates. We are looking forward to a new week of hard work and improving!!
U14

Player of the Match Circle with Belmont Shore
U14 had a solid performance and beat Belmont Shore with a strong showing in the second half. Going into halftime at 15-15 in a tight match, key players stepped up in the 2nd half to score 20 unanswered points and finish with a final 35-15 victory. Tyler and Tyson Williams manned the second row superbly, winning all the lineouts and contested a few Belmont Shore throw-ins. Taniela also had a positive impact on the back of the scrum with line-breaking runs and 3 tries. Other try scorers were Ricardo Ramirez, Caden Jackson, and Cruz. Defensively, have to shout out Xavier Costa (team’s youngest player) as he made 100% of his tackles on the wing!
U12

The U12s took on Belmont Shore this weekend with strong effort across both squads.
Our A-side faced an elite opponent, and while the score was lopsided, growth was evident. The kids were noticeably fitter than in weeks past and showed real progress on defense, coming up together, understanding roles, and being more aware of space. They played with toughness and grit and did exactly what we’ve been asking of them in training.
The B-side had a more evenly matched contest and delivered an impressive 30–10 win. The forwards were dominant, not losing a single scrum, and the backs executed some excellent plays to finish tries. A strong, complete team performance.
Overall, another step forward for the group. The work is paying off, and the kids continue to improve week by week
U10

Thunder U10 played two games against a solid Belmont Shore squad. First game was tough, Belmont scored non-stop. Coaches engaged with the kids, reminding them to treat it like practice and encouraged them to go out, have fun, and stop overthinking. In the second game it was a totally different story. Back-and-forth scoring the entire time. Kids were more focused, more hungry, and showed a lot of heart after the first loss. We lost by one try, we’re proud of the kids for their attitude and improvement!
U8

U8 Thunder put out 3 strong teams against Belmont Shore, showing great energy and effort throughout the day. Players worked hard in every game and embraced the challenge of strong competition. They supported one another, stayed engaged, and continued to push themselves each match…overall a fun day full of learning!
